Softball Earns Wins Over Dartmouth, Maryland on Friday

Against Dartmouth (0-1), Smith started and allowed just two runs (one earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Newman came on in relief in the eighth inning and locked down the Big Green. She allowed just two walks and struck out eight batters in 2.2 innings of work to pick up the win to improve to 6-3. However, in the tenth inning sophomore Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) doubled and moved to third on junior Kelsey Wright’s (Olathe, Kan.) double. Two batters later, senior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) drove a ball to left field to bring in Pena for the game-winner. Alexander and Finneran led the Bulldogs with two hits each. The Bulldogs wasted little time scoring against the Terrapins as junior Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) smashed a two-run home run in the first inning. Freshman Sarah Maddox (Henderson, Nev.) added an insurance run in the seventh inning with a RBI single that plated Wright. Alexander and Maddox led the Bulldogs with two hits each. Against Maryland (1-9), Newman earned the start in the circle and allowed just three hits with 12 strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Smith took over in the sixth inning and allowed just two hits with three strikeouts. Newman improved to 7-3 with her second win of the day and Smith collected her first save of the season.center_img Next Game: LAFAYETTE, La. – The Drake University softball team earned a pair of wins on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Mardi Gras Invitational presented by DoubleTree. In the first game, Drake (10-5) edged Dartmouth, 3-2, in 10 innings before blanking Maryland, 3-0, to close the day. Smith drove in the Bulldogs’ first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Darmouth tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning and then took the lead at 2-1 in the seventh inning. Drake quickly answered in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) singled to start the frame, and pinch runner Abby Buie (Gardner, Kan.) promptly stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Fellow freshman Aryka Knoche (Little Canada, Minn.) then plated Buie with a sacrifice fly to send the game to extras.
