The project ensures clean, safe drinking water for area residents and businesses. It is the 15th water treatment facility built by WRD. The treatment plant has restored a well that would have been shut down due to contamination, officials said. The well provides the majority of drinking water for Pico Rivera. Health center to hold free fair LA HABRA – The Friends of Children Health Center is hosting a community health fair from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 501 S. Artists wanted for city banners WHITTIER – The Whittier Community Services Department and the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation are seeking artists to participate in the fourth annual street banner program. Local artists of all ages are encouraged to submit scaled- down drawings for consideration to be painted on to banners measuring 30 inches by 104 inches. The theme is “Music Through the Years.” They should take into account these banners will be viewed from distances of eight to 30 feet or more. The designs should measure 5-inches-by-14-inches and be vertically oriented. Bright colors are suggested. Applicants must submit their designs in person or by mail by 5 p.m. Dec. 3 to the Community Services Department, 13230 Penn St. Judging will be by the Whittier Cultural Arts Projects Review Committee. Those selected will be notified by mid-December. Applicants may submit a maximum of two designs. Once completed, the banners become the property of the city. Veterans’ council to host ceremony PICO RIVERA – The Pico Rivera Veterans’ Council will sponsor its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans’ Memorial Monument, at the corner of the Rosemead Boulevard and Mines Avenue. City Councilman and Los Angeles County Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Bob Archuleta will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers include Vietnam veteran John Adame and guests include Rep. Grace Napolitano, the Pico Rivera City Council and the El Rancho High School ROTC. Daniel Smilie, Jeremy Norton and Dusty Brown of Whittier will be honored for their work on the Veterans Monument site. They earned their Eagle Scout status by completing a three- phase rose garden project.
