Town Of Wilmington May Ask That Fewer Trains Stop At North Wilmington Station

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA – On Monday night, Town Manager Jeff Hull updated the Board of Selectmen on the town’s latest efforts to have MBTA Commuter Rail trains end their practice of blocking Middlesex Avenue when stopped at the North Wilmington station. Trains have been impeding police, fire and ambulance services responding to emergencies.“There was a conference call this past week involving Selectmen Chairman Caira, Fire Chief McMahon, Police Chief Begonis, Deputy Fire Chief Cavanaugh, and participants from the MBTA. It was hosted by Senator Tarr, and involved Representatives Gordon and Robertson,” began Hull.“[MBTA] officials recently went out and did a review during a one-week period to identify the number of passengers getting off and on [at the North Wilmington station],” continued Hull. “Five particular periods on the inbound train have been identified where there’s very little activity.”On the conference call, Hull said that a discussion took place about running a trial where the inbound train would NOT stop at the station during those five particular periods. Currently, these periods consist of “flag stops” where the train slows down and comes to a complete stop only if there are passengers to be picked up.“The expectation is to try to receive some input from the public to see if this proposal should be a go,” added Hull.Wilmington’s legislative delegation and MBTA officials had been invited to the Board of Selectmen’s next meeting on Monday, April 8 to discuss this proposal and other potential options.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook.
